Stepper had me at Hello ~ his goofy smile, his wonderful personality ~ he had a long career and languished in Daytona's adoption kennel for 1-1/2 years as he was "too old/too big/too whatever". When I lost my Runner, and SugarBear went into depression, I was told she needed another greyhound ~ Stepper was the one, I knew that as he so needed a home. Stepper stepped up to the plate and got Sugs and I both laughing.
Stepper was one of those awesome beings that had no "issues" and was just happy to be, his biggest decision was what side of his mouth should he hang his tongue out of as he smiled. Stepper was my nurse, my buddy, my confidante, my heart and soul. Stepper helped every hound that came into my home adjust, he was the peacekeeper, my smilemaker, my rock.
As a result of his long career and age, Stepper's hind end got shakier and shakier, as Marilyn told me, I enjoyed the moments instead of fear the "moment" and Step and I had a wonderful time. Stepper was a total goof, finally finding the couch at 13-1/4 years old, and then never leaving it.
When the day came that he could not get his back end up off the couch to eat, he looked at me in his way, like what now mom, I took his dinner over to him and his water. We both knew what he needed for his dignity. He walked into the vet's office and that was as much as he could do, his back end gave out. Stepper went in my arms with me telling him how very much I loved him and would miss him.
Stepper I love you and miss you so very very much. I think today is the day the tears are coming and I am here crying like a baby for you my big guy.
Stepper run with the angels sweetie, I love you and always will ~ till we meet again. ~
